Your first month at BAK

A short guide to getting started: what it costs, when we run, and who to speak to. Nobody is going to make you race anything.

What membership actually is

Membership of Bellville AC is two things, each with its own cost:

  1. Membership of the club — the club runs, the time trial, the awards, the social side and the clubhouse.
  2. An ASA licence number (Athletics South Africa, via Western Province Athletics) — this is what lets you enter races as a licensed club runner at the cheaper entry fee. It is optional: social members don’t need one.

Both can be paid in a single payment of R 360 to the club, and both are renewed each year (usually in February).

The club runs on two channels — please ask to be added to both, otherwise you will miss run announcements and race logistics.

Thursday time trial

5 km or 3 km, 18:00, from the clubhouse. The backbone of the week — and there is usually a cold drink afterwards.

Monday club run

17:40, 10 km or 6 km. The friendlier of the two sessions, with a shorter option for newcomers.

Last Thursday braai

Help at our races

We organise two races every year, and club members are expected to help at them — marshalling, registration, water tables, prize giving. It is how a club of our size puts on a race that runners come back to.

  • Dan Luyt Memorial 15 km — usually February or early March
  • BAKgat 10 km — usually October

We also host an annual golf day and social functions such as the Two Oceans pasta party and the year-end function.

Next steps

  1. Come to a club run. Monday 17:40 or Thursday 18:00. It’s free, and nobody checks your pace.
  2. Pay your membership — R 360 for the club plus your ASA licence, into the club account with your surname as reference.
  3. Get your kit. A club vest and navy shorts/tights are compulsory at races, and Ronel sells both at the clubhouse.
  4. Ask to be added to the Facebook group and WhatsApp group so you hear about everything else.
