BellvilleAthletic Club

About us

Since 1933, on the roads of Bellville

A club built out of two committees — road running and track & field — and a clubhouse in Danie Uys Park that has been the start of thousands of runs.

Our history

Bellville Athletics Club has its roots in the Parow Athletics and Cycling Club, founded in 1933 and renamed the Bellville Athletics and Cycling Club in 1938. In 1958 the athletics and cycling arms parted ways and the Bellville Athletics Club became autonomous.

Originally the club catered mostly for track and field athletics, but as road running grew the club split its management into two separate committees in 1982 — track & field and road running. Together those two committees make up the Bellville Athletics Club.

We have a proud heritage. Bellville athletes who have represented South Africa include Ewald Bonzet, Terence Brown, Heidi de Kock, Désiré du Plessis, Marilize Engelbrecht, Thea Kitshoff, Marcus la Grange, Esmari le Roux, Tanya Peckham, Bobang Phiri, Cornelius Uys, Adri van der Merwe, Chantelle Terblanche, Marius Hugo-Schlechter, John van Reenen, Esther Brand, Hennie Kotzé, Elana van Zyl and Marius van Heerden — to name only a few. Our current world-class athletes include Antonio Alkana and Rocco van Rooyen, with a long list of juniors coming up behind them.

Our coaches keep producing and our athletes keep performing: we contribute the most athletes to Western Province teams of any club, and many to national teams competing internationally. Two of our coaches hold IAAF qualifications; the rest are ASA qualified.

Disciplines

Road running

10 km to ultra distance on the Western Cape road circuit, time trials every Thursday, and the club challenges that keep the season interesting.

Cross country

Winter cross country through Western Province Athletics, with athlete-of-the-year awards based on series points.

Trail running

Trail races on the ASA calendar count for your results and your awards, and there is always someone heading out on the weekend.

Where we run

Our clubhouse is in Danie Uys Park (opposite DF Malan High School), off Frans Conradie Road, Bellville. All club runs and time trials start there.

Club runs head out in and around Jack Muller Park and Boston, with longer routes into the Tygerberg hills for the advanced group.
